Liver Cleanse Regimen
Summary: Use FutureBiotics Silymarin Plus. If additional action is needed, add Planetary Herbal's Stone Free. If there are fatty or mineral deposits (like gallstones) in the liver or gallbladder, additionally take a cup of unfiltered apple juice and a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil before bed for a few weeks. Always use The Water Cure and eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables while performing liver cleansing. Use a 1:1 ratio calcium magnesium multimineral supplement like Now Full Spectrum Mineral Caps or Solaray Cal-Mag Citrate long term for maintenance.
The Electroherbalism Liver cleansing regimen is a gentle process that lasts a few weeks. This is as opposed to a liver and gallbladder flush, which involves drinking epsom salts, grapefruit or lemon juice, and olive oil. This therapy is detailed in The Liver Flush regimen and is daunting to many people. It is best to use a liver cleanse regimen before the liver flush and in many cases, a liver cleansing regimen that lasts a couple of weeks is just as effective as a liver flush.
The liver and gallbladder can accumulate chemicals, toxic metals, and mineral deposits. Cleaning them can be important for improving health since a well-functioning liver is crucial to most other organs' continued health. Besides playing a central role in the body's immune system by metabolizing and dispensing toxins, the liver (and gallbladder) also provides bile, an acid which digests food, as well as enzymes.
Allergies appear to often be a sign of a congested liver. When the liver loses the ability to process toxins, and even normal constituents of some foods, it can send them out to the skin to be expelled, causing a rash. Sometimes the system gets so congested that something eaten or even just rubbed on the skin can cause an immediate reaction.
Poor digestion can be a sign of a congested liver, too. When its function is impaired, it may not make enough digestive acids or enzymes and digestion can suffer.
Nutrients, especially magnesium and some B vitamins, are necessary for the proper function of the liver. Consider using a multimineral with a 1:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium, such as Now Full Spectrum Mineral Caps, and a multivitamin that contains a good amount of B vitamins. See the General Maintenance Regimen for more information.
When the liver is being cleaned, it is imperative to ensure that elimination is not hampered. If toxins are expelled and elimination is sluggish, the toxins are reabsorbed by the intestines and end up back in the liver. Using liver cleansers like the Silymarin Plus, the apple juice, and the olive oil will speed elimination but further insurance can be had by using The Water Cure and eating plenty of non-starchy vegetables and fruits, rich in fiber. Use vitamin C and magnesium in sufficient dose if additional action is needed - even magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) taken short term will work for this purpose. Only 100 to 200% RDA of magnesium is necessary each day, usually best taken at night. Using magnesium and B vitamins long term will help preserve progress, as will vitamin C in sufficient dose.
Lecithin is often recommended for liver cleansing and for good reason. It is one of the most effective supplements to remove fatty deposits in the body, including that in the liver, and may even help reduce cholesterol-based stones in the liver and gallbladder.
Sometimes when the liver is being stimulated, temporary acid indigestion will result. In this case, use fennel seed in a high enough amount to control it.
